Résumé

Jane Holman, en voiture avec ses fils Tom et Gunny, renverse accidentellement un vagabond, nommé Jack McCloud. Il a la jambe cassée. Désolée, Jane l'invite à séjourner chez elle avec son chien Betty Jane jusqu'à sa guérison. Après quelques difficultés d'adaptation, Jack se fait aimer de tous. Lorsqu'il commence à enseigner le baseball à Tom, à qui son père, disparu pendant la guerre de Corée, manque beaucoup, ils développent un lien très fort. Mais Gunny est persuadé que Jack a quelque chose à cacher.
